During the Warring States Period, the archery expert Geng Wei pulled the empty string and frightened the injured wild geese in the air. This is the origin of the term "a frightened bird". However, when we go to the archery hall to practice archery, we always see a striking slogan: "It is strictly forbidden to release the string without an arrow!" Why is it strictly forbidden to release the bow without an arrow when shooting arrows?
1. It is easy to damage the equipment
The structure of the bow and arrow is to drive the bow piece by pulling the bowstring, and the arrow on the string is driven by the rebound of the bow piece when releasing. If there is no arrow on the string, the huge force of the bow piece rebounding will act completely on the bow piece itself. The durable bow piece can still withstand it, and the unresistant bow piece will break directly. And no matter how durable the bow piece is, there is a risk of flipping the bow.
Shooting after nocking
2. Hazard to personal safety
For heavy-pound bows (starting from 60 pounds), there is still a lot of kinetic energy on the bowstring that has not been fully released after the bow limbs are broken. If there is no structural protection, the bowstring can directly cut the wrist. Even if there is structural protection, heavy-pound bows will pose a hidden danger to the personal safety of archers when the posture is incorrect during archery.
Children's archery must be supervised by adults
In addition to not being able to shoot in the air, if too light arrows are used, the bow limbs will be damaged due to insufficient kinetic energy absorption, which is about 70% to 30% of the damage of shooting in the air. If the arrow is too tight and the arrow cannot be shot out, the same consequences will occur.
Therefore, all archery halls have two major regulations, one is to prohibit shooting in the air, and the other is to prohibit nocking arrows when there are people on the archery range.
