The winner of an archery competition is calculated by the number of rings that the athlete hits on the target. The closer the arrow hits the target, the higher the number of rings. When the archer is ready to shoot, he holds the bow with his bow hand and straightens his bow arm, then pulls the bowstring back with his string hand until it reaches the full bow point, looks at the sight and then releases. The Olympic archery competition adopts a single elimination system, and the competition lasts for 6 days.

The individual competition is divided into three stages: ranking, elimination and final, with a range of 70 meters (previously the longest distance was 90 meters). The ranking competition is held first, with 64 male and female athletes, each shooting 6 groups of arrows, 6 arrows in each group, a total of 36 arrows. After a 10-15 minute rest, shoot again according to the above procedure, a total of 72 arrows. The cumulative number of rings of these 72 arrows will be used to rank the 1st to 64th male and female players, and they will be paired according to the knockout match pairing table of archery rules, such as: the 1st to the 64th, the 2nd to the 63rd, and so on, for the knockout match. In the knockout match, each athlete shoots 12 arrows, divided into 4 groups, 3 arrows in each group, 30 seconds per arrow, using a one-on-one alternating shooting method. The winners will enter the next stage of the competition, and finally 8 athletes will enter the final. The shooting method and number of arrows of the athletes in the final are the same as those in the knockout match, and the champion and runner-up will be decided in the end. The team competition is divided into two stages: the knockout match and the final. Each team has 3 athletes, and the shooting range is 70 meters. According to the sum of the scores of the 3 athletes in each team in the individual ranking competition, the 1st to 16th male and female teams will enter the team knockout match. Each team shoots a total of 24 arrows, divided into 4 groups, 6 arrows in each group, and each person shoots 2 arrows, with a time limit of 2 minutes. After the team that shoots first shoots 3 arrows (each athlete takes turns shooting 1 arrow), the clock is paused and the remaining time is kept. At the same time, the clock of the other team starts and shoots 3 arrows in the same way. Then, the team that shoots first completes 3 more arrows in the remaining time, and then the team that shoots later completes the shooting of this group of arrows in the same way. The winning team enters the next stage of the competition. The shooting method and number of arrows in the final are the same as those in the elimination round, and the champion and runner-up are finally determined.

Scoring method The number of rings in an archery competition is also called the score, and reporting the rings is also called reporting the target or reporting the score. When confirming the ring values of the elimination rounds and finals, the referee reports the scores in descending order, and the scorer and the athlete agent verify the results on the score sheet. (The scorer and the athlete look at the number of rings at the same time) The specific scoring method is: 1 point for hitting the outermost white ring area - until 10 points for hitting the inner yellow heart (the yellow heart has an outer ten rings and an inner ten rings, in order to compare the same scores) If an arrow hits the position that touches the ring area of two colors or the arrow shaft touches the ring line, it will be recorded as a high score. If an arrow hits the tail of an arrow on the target surface, the score will be based on the ring value of the arrow that has hit the target. If an arrow penetrates the target surface, or rebounds and falls to the ground after hitting the target surface, the score will be based on the target point or unmarked arrow hole left by the arrow on the target surface (scoring is based on the traces of the arrow). Regardless of whether the target is hit or not, the arrow will be scored if it crosses the 3-meter line; if the arrow accidentally falls to the ground, but part of the arrow shaft falls within the 3-meter line, the referee will judge the arrow as not shot, and the athlete can shoot another arrow.Olympic ranking competition venue: Generally, there are 22 targets with a width of about 150 meters. Men and women will conduct ranking competitions separately. The ranking competition venue is also the warm-up training venue before the game, during the knockout rounds and the finals (different from the venue for the official competition, so the venue is used for warm-up before the game). In addition to the 22 targets, a certain number of warm-up targets with a distance of 10 meters should be provided. Olympic knockout and final venues: In the knockout stage, you can use a plan of setting up 4 targets in one venue, or you can use a plan of setting up 2 targets in each of 2 venues. However, in the final stage, only 2 targets are set up on the venue, and spectator seats should be set up around the knockout and final venues.

According to different functions, the archery field is divided into several areas. Targets for archery competitions are generally square and round. Targets are made of straw and linen or other suitable materials. The side length and diameter of the target shall not be less than 124 cm, and the thickness is generally 15-25 cm. The target is required to be strong and durable, with moderate hardness, so that the arrow can be easily shot into without damage and not easily penetrated or rebounded or fallen off. The frame that supports the target is called the target frame. It is made of wood or bamboo and must be sturdy, but it must not cause damage to the arrow. The target frame is placed obliquely on the finish line, with an angle of about 10-15 degrees to the vertical line of the ground. The height of the center of each ring target is 130 cm from the ground, and all should be on a straight line. The ring target is circular with a diameter of 122 cm. From the center to the outside, there are five concentric color areas of equal width: yellow, red, light blue, black and white. Each color area is divided into two equal width areas of the same color by a thin line, thus forming 10 equal width ring areas. There is a central ring line in the 10-ring area, called the inner 10 rings, which is used to evaluate some rankings with the same number of rings. The partition ring line is drawn in the high ring area. The outer edge line of the outermost white area is drawn in the scoring zone. The line width shall not exceed 2 mm.

The center of the ring target is marked with a + symbol, called a pinhole. The line width of the + symbol shall not exceed 1 mm. The target ring can be made of paper, cloth or other appropriate materials, but in the same competition, all materials are required to be the same and the specifications are uniform. The equipment of athletes includes bows, arrows and other equipment. The bows and arrows used by archery athletes are the results of the latest modern technology and have good performance. The bow can be equipped with a sight, and it is allowed to install a stabilizer or an arrow flight shock absorber, but it is not allowed to be used for string aiming and cannot touch other objects.

Generally speaking, modern bows can be divided into compound bows and recurve bows. Compound bow recurve bow A recurve bow is mainly composed of a bow handle, a bow piece, a sight, a signal piece, an arrow stand, and a balance rod (V-shaped seat, an extension rod, a push handle, a long rod, and a side rod). Arrows include arrowheads, arrow shafts, arrow tails and arrow feathers. The style and color combination of arrow feathers used by athletes in the same group of competitions must be the same. Each athlete's name or abbreviation should be marked on each arrow to distinguish them. Athletes may wear some protective gear, including finger guards (leather hand guards), arm guards, chest guards, archery glasses and sunglasses. These equipment must comply with the rules of the International Archery Federation. Before the archery competition, the bows, arrows, finger guards (leather hand guards) and glasses used by athletes must be checked by the referee to comply with the competition rules.
